What sets us apart

On any night at Fado Maior

  1. 01

    Both Portuguese Fado traditions

Lisbon style, the Fado the world knows. And Coimbra Fado, with over a century of tradition, sung in black academic capes, rarely heard outside academic circles.

  2. 02

    Two resident groups

Two distinct groups of musicians, one for each Fado style, every night. Each draws from the senior names of the Porto Fado scene.

  3. 03

    A centuries-old tavern

Steps from the Douro. Stone vaults, candle light, no microphones. The kind of room Fado was born in, with the musicians close to your seat.

Manifesto

Dear Fado lover,

We opened Fado Maior in 2024 because, as Fado lovers, we wanted a Fado house we would want to walk into ourselves, one we could be proud of.

We believe that what makes a Fado evening real is not how often the words "authentic", "genuine" or "pure" appear on the wall. That is marketing copy for tourists, because Fado is already pure by its very nature, alive and shifting across generations. What makes Fado real, authentic, pure, genuine (pick the word that sells), is the truth with which the musicians give themselves to the song, and the closeness between them and the people listening.

From day one, we made it our mission to bring both Portuguese Fado styles under one roof. Lisbon Fado, the one the world knows, born in the streets and taverns of Lisbon almost two centuries ago and inscribed by UNESCO as world heritage. And Coimbra Fado, with over a century of history, sung in black academic capes, rarely heard outside academic circles, with a strong scene of its own in Porto.

That is what we are after, every night. In this centuries-old tavern in Miragaia, the kind of room where Fado was born, and where it still belongs.

The Fado Maior team

Portugal has two Fados

The same instruments.
Two ways of being Fado

Lisbon Fado

The erudite song of the people

Born in the streets and taverns of Lisbon. Sung free and from the throat, by women and men alike, with much of the art living in the improvisation that happens on the night. The voices of Amália Rodrigues and Fernando Maurício carried it from those taverns out into the world, where in 2011 UNESCO inscribed it as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Coimbra Fado

The popular song made erudite

Born in the universities of Coimbra over a century ago, sung only by men in academic black capes, with a technique closer to opera and little room for improvisation. Its repertoire runs from popular song to erudite music, across many different rhythms. The voices of Luiz Goes and Edmundo Bettencourt carried it beyond academic circles, and today it lives in the serenades and university nights kept alive by many groups in Coimbra and Porto alike.

Unforgettable Fado experience at Fado Maior do Porto. It offers an authentic and emotional Fado experience that perfectly reflects the soul of Portuguese culture. From the first note, you're immersed in the powerful voices and beautiful melodies that make traditional Fado in Porto so special. The atmosphere is intimate and cozy, creating the perfect setting to enjoy live Fado music while feeling truly connected to the history and passion behind it.

Wonderful fado experience. Very authentic. I appreciate the fact that they don't serve a meal, like a tourist trap, to distract from the performance. Just a nice glass of port wine. Two artists performed. The first one from Coimbra with that style of fado and then the lovely Vania Leal and her guitarists with Lisbon style fado. Highly recommend.

Fado Maior do Porto was, for me, one of the most special places in Porto to experience Fado. From the very first moment, I felt so warmly welcomed, almost like being invited into something truly special. The artists were incredibly passionate, and I could feel the emotion in every song. The whole evening felt intimate, gentle, and full of soul. Experiencing both traditional Fado and Fado de Coimbra in one night made it even more unique. With a glass of Port wine in hand, it became one of those simple, perfect moments I won't forget.

I had an amazing experience here. The vibes were impeccable and the acoustics of the room for the music perfectly. The port wine was also amazing; the best I've had in Portugal.

Brilliant! Authentic Fado with two performances so you feel the Coimbra Fado in addition. Very moving, the musicians are extremely talented. The atmosphere is so intimate but comfortable with fantastic acoustics with the stone walls. This place offers just the concert performances, this is better, without the noise of people eating! Easy to get tickets and the best value in the city!

Such a great experience! My husband and I were looking to experience Fado, but didn't want to do the full dinner thing, and also didn't want it to feel super touristy. We loved Fado Maior for a few reasons. It was tucked away on a little side street and the whole venue sat maybe 50 people. There was a good view from almost every seat, and it was spacious enough where you weren't on top of people, but it still felt intimate. The music was also incredible — they were all so talented.

When can I see a show and how long does it last?

Shows last about 1 hour. Click here to check show times

Do I need to book in advance?

We recommend buying tickets online: you'll secure your seat and get a discount. But if you turn up without a booking and there are seats available, you're welcome to join us.

Can I get a refund if I change my plans?

Yes. Cancel at least 12 hours before the show and you get a full refund, no questions asked. Just email [email protected].

Does the ticket include a glass of port wine?

No. We used to offer a complimentary glass, but too much wine was going to waste because not everyone drank it. So we lowered the ticket price: that way, non-drinkers don't pay for drinkers. If you'd like port wine, you can buy a glass for €5, better quality and better served, with a choice of tawny, ruby or white.

Is dinner included? Can I buy food or drinks?

The show is entirely dedicated to the art of Fado, so dinner is not served. You can buy port wine, tawny, ruby or white, for €5 per glass. We don't serve food.

Are children welcome?

The show is open to guests aged 12 and over.

Is there a dress code?

Not at all. Come as you are, casual, smart, or straight from the beach. We just want you here. The room is intimate and the music is what matters.

Can I take photos or videos?

Yes, as long as you're respectful of the artists and the people around you. Devices must be on silent, no flash or lights, and please don't block anyone's view.
