Lisbon Fado
The erudite song of the people
Born in the streets and taverns of Lisbon. Sung free and from the throat, by women and men alike, with much of the art living in the improvisation that happens on the night. The voices of Amália Rodrigues and Fernando Maurício carried it from those taverns out into the world, where in 2011 UNESCO inscribed it as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
